Elizabeth George

Legal Director & Barrister

Specialist employment law barrister, Elizabeth George, joined didlaw in 2019. An “outstanding lawyer” and “one of the leading claimant lawyers in London” (The Legal 500, 2019).

A leader in her field, Elizabeth provides specialist advice and representation in both contentious and non-contentious matters across all areas of employment and discrimination law. Working as a solicitor before qualifying as a barrister at top ranked employment set, Cloisters, Elizabeth has litigated tirelessly on behalf of employees and has achieved considerable success.

She was “Times Lawyer of the Week” after securing a win against the MOD (The Telegraph -Serving RAF officer discriminated against ‘because she was pregnant’, tribunal rules). In 2015 her work secured the prestigious “Employment Team of the Year” at the 2015 Lawyer Awards.

She acted for Zahera Gabriel-Abraham (The Guardian – In praise of … Zahera Gabriel-Abraham) against International Sports Retailer, Sports Direct and has been at the forefront of litigation, training and campaign work to highlight the abuse of zero hours contracts and all other forms of insecure working.

Elizabeth has a long-standing commitment to achieving a fairer and more equal workplace for women and secured a rare public win for solicitor, Katie Tantum (Legal Business – Travers Smith in surprise discrimination defeat), in pregnancy discrimination proceedings brought against City law firm, Travers Smith Braithwaite.

Cutting her teeth in the law centre movement, Elizabeth is a vocal advocate for greater access to justice and affordable high-quality advice and representation to those who need it most.
Elizabeth’s mum was a nurse and trade union Branch Secretary. Elizabeth is proud to have inherited her mum’s fighting spirit.

Elizabeth has a comprehensive knowledge of employment law and practice, conducts her own advocacy (when there is time) and is an experienced trainer and speaker. She is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association, the Discrimination Law Association and the Industrial Law Society.

Her cases have been reported in every National Newspaper and she is frequently asked to comment on employment and discrimination issues, as well as appearing on various BBC and Channel 4 news programmes and documentaries.

Elizabeth is currently instructed by several hundred staff bringing a national group equal pay claim against retailer, next (The Guardian – Next facing £30m equal pay claim from shop-floor staff).

“I was having a very difficult time with my employers and didlaw gave me the support and legal clout that I needed in order to reach a satisfactory conclusion. I found everyone at didlaw to be very helpful, friendly and easy to talk to. In particular, I was always treated with great respect and never felt “put down”, stupid or rushed when speaking to didlaw staff about my employment matter, I could say all that I needed to say and was always listened to.”

"The speed with which my situation was taken on board, understood and acted upon was excellent and very re-assuring. Throughout our dealings both empathy and communication were excellent. I would have no hesitation in recommending the firm."

“Although I requested your legislative services I received far more than that. Your moral support throughout the difficult times I’ve been through has been more than I would have hoped for. It is true, you’re not just another law firm!”
